Wednesday, June 8, 2011
Ganesha Chaturthi is the Hindu festival of Ganesha (also known as Vinayaga Chaturthi) and is the birthday of Ganesha, who is widely worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune.
Ganesha is son of Shiva and Parvati, and is believed to bestow his presence on earth for all his devotees in the duration of this festival.
The festival starts on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period) and it is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada.
The date falls between 20 August and 15 September. This festival lasts for 10 days and ends on Anant Chaturdashi (fourteenth day of the waxing moon period)

Ganesha Chaturthi is most elaborate in western and southern India, and outside India it is celebrated too in Nepal and in the United States, Canada and Fiji.
