India's benchmark gold futures on the Multi Commodity Exchange extended gains by more than 1 percent on Friday morning and hit a new peak of 27,500 rupees per 10 grams, tailing a rally in the world market.

The October contract rose 1.07 percent to 27,464 rupees at 0434 GMT. It has risen nearly 17 percent in August.

Spot gold rose more than 1 percent to an all-time high of $1,844.55 an ounce, before easing to $1,842.

International gold could hit $1,900 an ounce in the next six months, driven by buyers seeking an investment safe from global economic problems, but a further rise to $2,000 looks unlikely, metals consultancy GFMS said on Thursday.

Police want to kill me : Ramdev | Government does not want to see me alive: Ramdev

Ramdev said he had come to Delhi on the eve of the 36th anniversary of the imposition of emergency and asserted that the situation 'was very much similar to the emergency'.

'At Ramlila Maidan, the police did not come to arrest me, they wanted to kill me. I won't give any evidence right now, because the case is pending with the Supreme Court,' said Ramdev.

He added that police attacked his supporters when they tried to extinguish the fire which started on the stage. 'The attempt to set the stage on fire was again an attempt to kill me. They attacked my supporters who were trying to extinguish the fire.'

Ramdev also lashed out at the way the government reacted to his protest, saying that if they suspected that he was doing something illegal, then why did four ministers go to the airport to meet him when he arrived and why did Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee write letters to him.

'Government doesn't wants to see Ramdev alive. If it's a mistake, then we'll commit such mistakes many times,' he thundered.

With the government trying to expose him over his thriving yoga business, Ramdev asserted that he was innocent. 'If the government finds any black money with me, they can declare it national property,' he said.

He dared the government to come clean on the issue of black money. 'If its not their money, then I ask, why are they afraid of declaring it as national property. I have uploaded all the details of our account in the website. Government should do the same,' he said.

After reaching Delhi, Ramdev rushed to G.B. Pant Hospital where the 51-yar-old Rajbala was being treated and invoked her condition as the government's tactic of repression against those protesting corruption and black money.

Rajbala suffered spinal injuries in the June 4 police crackdown.

'Bhrastachaar and atyachar' (corruption and cruelty) was the new rallying cry of Ramdev, who said that his 'fight was not illegal' and asserted that and 'nobody can silence' him.

'Behen Rajbala is in very critical condition. Only a miracle can save her once the ventilator is removed,' he said. If she lives, she won't be able to walk again,' he said.

'This government is not only corrupt but also cruel. If I had not asked the people to stay calm, there would have been a pool of dead bodies,' he added.

He was asked to leave Delhi and banned from entering the city for 15 days. Ramdev continued his fast in Haridwar and Dehradun till June 12.

Delhi Police has in an FIR on the Ramlila Maidan incident, cited 'provocative' speeches made by religious and political leaders, including Baba Ramdev and Sadhvi Ritambara, as the main reason for canceling permission for the yoga guru's protest at Ramlila Maidan.

Actor and Electronic Engineer R. Madhavan says that "I didn’t want a 9 to 5 job! and take up engineering to satisfy my family;s protocol"

Friday, June 24, 2011 0 comments

From TV to films, his career has been on a very consistent upswing. A trained electronics engineer with passions like aero modeling and skiing, communicating and public speaking, Indian actor, writer, film producer and TV host R Madhavan is making the best of both worlds - life and his profession. Living life on ones own terms and still doing what is best for everyone around him, he share’s his tips with Lata Khubchandani, on living life optimally.

Q. What did you want to do, when in school?
A. I was aware of what I didn’t want to do – a 9 to 5 job! I didn’t want to stick to a routine.

Q. Why did you take up engineering then?
A. To satisfy my family’s protocol.

Q. How did education mould your sensibilities?
A. I had the good fortune of finishing my education across the world - Bihar, Kolhapur Canada, USA. I learnt how to fit into different groups. The lifestyle in Canada during high school was westernised. Kolhapur (engineering) was totally different. But I fitted in and achieved more here than in Canada. I took up public speaking, won a lot of competitions. A friend and I would decide, which competitions to enter depending on the prize money!

Q. Were your parents upset?
A. I got the Electronics Engineering Degree with a lot of hard work but when I didn’t take it up as a career, they were disappointed but not heartbroken. They knew I was a survivor. I was earning Rs. 60,000 to 70,000 a month teaching public speaking and communication skills in college. Plus I had been abroad so many times on so many scholarships including as an NCC cadet that they knew I’d be okay.

Jayesh Desai, Chairman of Raj Hans group, said he purchased the car a fortnight ago. "I have bought the 360 Modena Ferrari car directly from Sachin Tendulkar with all legal documents," , but declined to reveal the price.
"It was my dream to drive a Ferrari and now my dream has come true," Desai, who has a passion for driving luxury cars, said.

The Ferrari had got mired in a controversy in 2003 after it was reported that Tendulkar had requested for a customs duty waiver despite getting it as a gift and not winning it as a prize in a tournament.
In August 2003, the finance ministry had exempted Tendulkar from paying around Rs 1.13 crore (approximately USD 245,000) towards import duty for the vehicle, valued at Rs 75 lakh (approximately USD 162,600).
The car was gifted to him by FIAT, which manufactures the premium Ferrari cars and endorsed by Tendulkar, after the Indian batting legend equalled Don Bradman''s tally of 29 Test centuries.
Ferrari''s Formula One driver Schumacher presented the car on behalf of the company to Tendulkar when the two met in 2002 at Silverstone, England.

India's Top Brand Infosys and TATA in new index

Wednesday, June 22, 2011 0 comments

IT giant Infosys and salt-to-software conglomerate Tata have emerged as the Top 2 brands in India, beating global majors like Google, Nokia and Facebook, in a new index.

According to TLG''s Index of emerging market ''Thought Leaders'', seven out of the top ten brands in India were indigenous firms.

TLG, in partnership with international research consultancy firm GlobeScan, launched the index wherein government ministers, directors of blue chip companies and newspaper editors were asked to identify corporate brands with the power to change the attitudes and behaviour of consumers, employees or politicians -- defined as "Thought Leaders".

The list of top 20 firms was peppered with Indian brands including Larsen & Toubro (5th), State Bank of India (7th), Life Insurance Corporation of India (12th), Bharti Airtel (13th), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (14th), Aditya Birla Group (15th), The Oberoi Group (16th), HDFC Bank (17th), Dr Reddy''s Laboratories (18th) and Ranbaxy Laboratories (19th).

"... Absence of many ''Western'' major brands from the top 20 may concern CEOs who are trying to crack the BRICs. They need to refocus their energies on telling their leadership story," TLG Founder Malcolm Gooderham said.

The Top 10 features two joint ventures between local and overseas companies. The JVs are Maruti-Suzuki (4th) and Hindustan Unilever (9th).

Commenting on the findings, GlobeScan Research Director Oliver Martin said, "As the public''s faith in corporate leadership is declining in India, companies must excel in business innovation and progressive CSR to retain a Thought Leadership position." The top-ranked foreign firm is Google, which enters the index at number three, followed by Nokia at sixth rank and Facebook at eighth position.

"Western firms that succeed (Google, Nokia and Facebook) are those that adapt their models to local conditions, or ones that form JVs with locals in the driving seat (Suzuki, Unilever)," the report said.

Google, through its YouTube platform, streams live Indian Premier League cricket matches, while Facebook offers mobile access for a special rate of 1 rupee a day.

The Dalit girl, who was stabbed in her eyes allegedly by two youths when she resisted a rape attempt, may never be able to see from her left eye again, doctors treating her said here.

"The 14-year-old victim was stabbed in both her eyes with some sharp-edged weapon but the damage to her left eye is severe. The cornea of the left eye is totally damaged which may result in loss of eyesight, Principal of Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Medical College Anand Swaroop said.

"When the victim was brought to the medical college here, her condition was bad. Both the eyes were bleeding and her shoulders were also injured," Swaroop said.

She was immediately admitted to the eye department and a team of specialists attended her, he added.

The girl has been operated upon on both her eyes. Doctors say that left eye is severely damaged but right eye is in a better condition.

"After being operated we asked her if she can see from her right eye to which she admitted a blurred vision", Swaroop said.

The girl will be kept in the hospital for a minimum of one week. All the expenses are taken care of by the medical department, Swaroop said.

Now, free condoms, contraceptives at your doorstep! | Gov. launch new scheme for male and fema;e contraceptive | My 24News

The government will shortly launch a scheme to make male and female contraceptives available at people's doorsteps in a major bid to boost population control efforts, Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said Friday.…
Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) volunteers would promote the use of contraceptives - both male and female - at the household level in targeted districts, he said.
'Under the scheme, the centre will make available contraceptives free of cost at the block level, from where ASHA volunteers will pick up their supplies,' Azad said, addressing the 53rd Convocation of the International Institute of Population Sciences (IIPS) here.

Azad said the 2011 Census shows that efforts towards population stabilisation have yielded results.

'We have succeeded in reducing both fertility and mortality rates substantially and increasing the average life expectancy of the Indian population,' he said but expressed concern at the large regional disparities in demographic outcomes across different Indian states.

For instance, he said the Empowered Action Group (EAG) States, like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgrah - where 45 percent of India's population resides - lag behind the rest of the country in both fertility and mortality rate decline.

Azad emphasised that the government was committed to providing quality and universal health care to the rural population through the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).

'The funding to the health sector is going to be increased from the present level of less than 1 percent of GDP to 2-3 percent of GDP during the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17),' he said.

He also said that under the newly-launched Janani-Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), the government has made child deliveries at government health institutions completely free.

Launched June 1 this year, the scheme provides for free diagnostic tests including ultrasound, free medicine, free provision of blood, free diet up to three days for normal delivery and up to seven days in case of caesarean births and even free to and fro transport from home to hospital to all pregnant women, Azad said.

The IIPS is a premier academic institution in the field of population studies.

It has trained over 3,000 students and professionals in the field from India and several Asian countries including China, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and others.

It is renowned for its expertise in conducting large scale surveys, the results of which help the policy makers in formulating appropriate responses.

Kerala girl beated all cuts offs hands down | M.S.Shreelakshmi, student | Shri Ram Collegeof commerce

Sunday, June 19, 2011 0 comments

Kerala: This girl's report card beats all cut offs hands down. For M. S. Shreelakshmi, a student of Kerala Board who has applied to DU’s St Stephen’s College, no cut- off can prove to be a hurdle this year.

At a time when Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) has made applicants doubt the possibility of scoring a perfect 100 in at least four subjects, Sreelakshmi’s report card is quite the shocker.

A student of commerce, she has scored full marks in all her six subjects.

In other words, even a cut- off of 100 per cent can’t stop her from qualifying to any course in any college affiliated to DU this year. She has applied to B. A. ( Honours) Economics in Stephen’s.

“ Not only does she have 100 per cent in her best- of- four aggregate, but also in all the six subjects,” said N. Raghunathan, teacherin- charge, economics.

Raghunathan, however, pointed out that students of Kerala Board score very high marks every year.

“ But I have never seen anyone get perfect score in all subjects,” he added.

Earlier too she has won several National and International Awards for her excellence in web designing. The Association of American Webmasters honoured her by giving their membership along with their highest award for excellence in web designing, the Gold Web Award. She is the only member of the Association of American Webmasters, ever, under the age of 18.

She had received the National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement in 2008, the highest award in India for Children instituted by Govt. of India.

Sreelakshmi Suresh has already designed and developed 20 websites including website for Deaf’s, www.kozhikodedeaf.org,

Youngest Girl Web Designer and youngest CEO in the World, she designed and developed the official website of her school, Presentation Higher Secondary School, Kozhikode, Kerala, when she was only 8 years old.
